About

Hi, I'm Faye Marcos and I'm the girl behind Mash Up Maria.

Why Maria? Aside from the fact that it’s actually part of my full name (this is not about me, I promise), Maria or variations of it such as Mary or Marie are sort of generic first or second names for women the same way John is a generic name for men. I don’t know much about the statistics, but I’m sure every person knows someone named Maria. It’s like that weird phenomena of having a Tito Boy or a Tita Baby in every family. Maria is your classmate, your teacher, your sister, your next door neighbor, the nurse who attended to your needs when you were confined at the hospital. Maria is your Tita, your helper, your flight attendant or the school principal. Maria is your boss or that fresh graduate that you need to train at work. Maria is the receptionist, the lady guard, the jeepney barker at the terminal or the videoke sales person singing her heart out at the mall. Maria is your mother, a nun, a lady, a queen. Maria is a name that can more or less represent a big chunk of the population called women, and she is awesome.

As women, we have different roles to fulfill—daughter, sister, mother, aunt, partner and friend. But apart from these roles each one of us also has aspirations in every aspect of our lives namely our careers, our relationships, our health and spirituality, our personal growth, and our passions. There’s just so many things to do, a lot of skills to learn, countless places to go to, and a few hundred more items to check off the bucket list.

Thus, these two words: Mash Up. Mash up means to combine, or to mix.

The idea for this site was inspired by the book called Mash Up! By Ian Sanders and David Sloly. It’s a book that tells stories of people who have pursued a multi-dimensional life by leveraging their unique set of skills and passions to give them an edge, achieve balance and become happier. The book spoke to me because like most of the people I know in the Corporate World, I am continuously trying to achieve that balance with my day job versus my passions and hobbies.

My aim is to live a creative life despite doing a juggling act as an I.T. Consultant, an artist, a musician and part owner of a cupcake business. I write to chronicle my creative journey as an illustrator, crafter and calligrapher, my DIY projects and home decoration adventures in my Project Condo series. I also love hiking, traveling, doodling and sleeping in moving vehicles.
